The Knowledge

In the last fifteen years the number of management courses, textbooks, websites and textbooks has exploded. How do you find the real information? If any of the above is authored by a person who has actually managed a variety of events - then you will learn something. But it is difficult to assess and collate all the information. Hence we started the Event Management Body of Knowledge - the EMBOK. From this arose the International Competency Standard: Event Management.

The variety of events around the world imply there is no central or core knowledge. However, after working on events in over 40 countries and training thousands of event professionals, I have no doubt there is core knowledge. The ubiquitous checklist list is one example. There are underlying flowcharts followed for events in every country. Risk management is an example. Often the event professional is too involved in the operations of the event to see these. The figure below is a visual representation of this complexity. The EPMS takes the view that event management and event portfolio management are best described as interweaving processes.
